Eco School Council

What is Eco schools?

Eco Schools is an international award programme which seeks to guide schools toward greater sustainability, addressing a variety of environmental themes including reducing litter waste, encouraging healthy living and promoting biodiversity.

Iveagh’s involvement

Iveagh was one of the first schools in Northern Ireland to receive the permanent Eco schools award.  This award was granted in recognition of the school’s commitment to fulfilling the aims of the Eco Schools project.

Eight pupils are elected each year from Primaries 4-7, they are supported by staff members and parents and are themselves the driving force behind the Eco Council’s work.

Aims of Council are to:

Improve school environment

Reduce waste

Communicate with local councils and businesses

Promote awareness of environmental issues in school community

Current/ongoing Eco projects include –

                                                          Eco Assembly

                                                          Recyling –  Plastic bottles

                                                                             Fruit cores, peelings

                                                                             Yellow Pages

                                                                             Cardboard and paper

                                                                             Ink Cartridges

                                                         Supporting child in Uganda through

                                                         Fields of Life Project

                                                         Maintaining Eco Information Board

 

                               Eco  Council Rules

1.                We will respect the school grounds.

2.                We will not ignore litter.

3.                We will try to reuse or recycle waste paper and cardboard where possible.

4.                We will always put our litter in the bins provided for us.

5.                Fruit and waste must always be put in the collection bins around the school.

6.                Switch off all lights when they are not needed.

7.                Always turn the taps off when you finished with them.

8.                Only use one paper towel when drying your hands.
